PRINCIPAL OBOE

Jesse Martin

Daryl and Joyce Deering Chair

Jesse Martin began his music teaching career 23 years ago with the Avon Local School District, where he continues to teach to this day as the director of orchestras at Avon High School. In his first year with the district, he was asked to create an orchestra program which he implemented the following year in the fall of 2001 with a small group of 4th graders meeting before school. Since that time, the Avon LSD orchestra program has grown to over 400 students, with 4 high school string orchestras, 4 middle school string orchestras, a high school full symphony orchestra, and a rock orchestra, AEO (Avon Electric Orchestra), which he began in 2012.

Jesse received his Bachelor of Music Education from Baldwin-Wallace University in 2000, with emphasis on oboe and viola, having studied with former Cleveland Orchestra oboist Elizabeth Camus as well as violist Louise Zeitlin. He received his Masters of Music Education from Cleveland State University in 2013.

Jesse is also an avid performer in the Northeast Ohio area. He currently holds the position of principal oboe with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, principal oboe with the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, and second oboe/English Horn with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. As a woodwind doubler, one of Jesse’s favorite musical activities is playing in pit orchestras for musicals with a plethora of woodwind instruments surrounding him.

In his spare time outside of his busy life in music, he enjoys road trips, maps, exploring, biking, gardening, cooking, and spending time with his cat, Alejandro.
